PHOTOGRAPHER | DIRECTOR
New York based Director Barbara Anastacio grew up between Belgium and Portugal. She first began documenting the world around her by photographing family holidays aged just 13. Barbara contined to hone her photographic practice by completing a MA in Photography at the London College of Communications, before relocating to New York.
Barbara retains that early fascination of casual reportage, with a deep understanding and interest in people, growing from her earlier studies in anthropology.
Trasnsitioning from a stills Photographer to a Director, her work fluctuates between fashion, beauty and portraiture. All stamped with a unique sense of light humour and playfulness that she brings to her work. Often working in a intimate reportage style, her work has an immediacy and distinct character that she can extract from her subjects, drawing links back to the stills artists that influenced her early works; Weegee, Diane Arbus, and Seydou Keita.
Her personal interests have led her to investigate the sense of belonging and of contradiction; she deliberately seeks out places in which she feels uncomfortable, to bring back true stories of exploration.
