MICHAEL THOMAS
PHOTOGRAPHER

Working for an industrial photographer at the age of seventeen, using large format film cameras, and developing and printing all of the firm’s black and white output by hand, Michael’s early technical knowledge gave him a strong basis for later experimentation.
Whilst studying at London College of Printing’s prestigious BA Photography course Michael found work assisting world renowned fashion photographer Nick Knight, an experience that enabled him to see how far image making could be pushed, and to become familiar with the degree of technical excellence and commitment to a singular vision necessary to succeed in an ever evolving industry.
Michael’s career as a fashion photographer started with his first editorial commission from Katie Grand for Dazed and Confused magazine in 1996. He became a regular contributor to the magazine partnering up with stylist Cathy Edwards and going on to work for many other style and fashion magazines including 10 Magazine, Amica IT, Arena, Arena Hommes Plus, Big, Dazed, Details, Esquire, The Face, New York Times, L'Optimum, L'Officiel, The Telegraph, The Times, Vogue UK and Wallpaper.
Michael’s desire to evolve photographically led him to complete a masters degree at the London College of Communication and after to concentrate on still life photography, preferring the working process and laboratory like approach to the medium. His stylistically minimal, paired down, evidence based imagery focuses on process and form before narrative. He seeks out beauty in the mundane and ordinary, finding pleasure in rendering texture tone and form with arch precision, embracing imperfection and making it a virtue.
Michael’s studio is in London Fields.
