Based in London, Amber Rowlands started out in the late 90s on the pages of i–D magazine before graduating with an MA in Fine Art Photography from London College of Communication. It was during her studies that Rowlands developed her signature aesthetic – a considered approach that affords her various subjects quiet dignity in a balance of muted tones.

This style is well suited to her subject matter which ranges from menswear fashion and portraiture, as seen in the pages of the Telegraph and Port magazine, to culinary and botanical still life, as seen in Nowness and The Gourmand. Rowland’s sensitive approach is most clearly in her ongoing personal project, Suited and Booted, which follows the work of the eponymous charity that provides donated suits to vulnerable men returning to society. Rowlands deals with her subjects with a sincerity and care not often afforded to other people in their situation. The project has featured in the Observer, with writer Sean O’Hagen highlighting the ‘melancholy’, but also the ‘mixture of hope and vulnerability’ in Rowlands’ images.

Rowlands’ Suited and Booted was awarded the prestigious LCC Mack Book Award, with founder Michael Mack commenting that the series, ‘feels like the beginnings of both a wonderful body of work and the first soundings of a powerful and distinctive artist's voice’.
